Kenya News / TheVillage Basket

Kenya elected a new in 2023 and his namePresident William Ruto. During his campaign he pledged to champion the interests of the poor, but prices of basic commodities have risen under his administration and last month his government passed tax hikes.

The government says the levies on fuel and housing are needed to help deal with growing debt repayments and to fund job-creation initiatives. Political opposition leaders have been organizing protests for several months and on July 18th these protests became deadly. In Wednesday's unrest, Citizen TV reported that two people were shot dead and three wounded by gunfire in Nakuru, in the Rift Valley, without saying by whom. NTV reported that four people were shot in Nakuru while the Nation newspaper said seven were shot.

In Migori town in western Kenya, two people sought treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during protests there, Citizen TV reported. One person was shot dead and another wounded in the southern town of Makueni, Citizen TV said.

In the midst of these protests our Field Director Patrick Malasi traveled to a village called Nyamusi to provide Literacy Training to Pastors and students.

Countries in Africa are constantly on the edge of turmoil, especially when a new President is elected. Please pray for Patrick and his family as they continue their very important work in Kenya.
